SPHS 2011-2012 Marching Band

Welcome to the South Panola High School Band web page. This site is full of information that can be used by existing band members, parents, alumni, and anyone else interested in the South Panola Band program.

The purpose of the South Panola High School Band program is to provide each student with the opportunity to develop an overall appreciation and understanding of instrumental music. The program shall also encourage and promote the necessary skills, teamwork, and discipline to achieve musical success through performance and personal growth.

The band season usually begins with Rookie camp for freshmen and new students, and is followed by a week of guard and percussion camp. The summer culminates with full band camp for all band students. The highlight of band camp is Exhibition and Field Day, which is usually the last day of camp, and an opportunity for the students to showcase what they have learned to parents, administrators, and the community as a whole. Field games are played as a friendly competition among the various sections and a big barbeque ends the activities for the day and week.

The highlight of the fall semester is during football season. The Band members are eager to travel with the team to entertain the crowds and show their tiger pride and school loyalty. This is also the time of the year that band members participate in Statewide Marching Band Festivals and other band competitions.

During the spring of the year, the students are placed according to audition results into one of the three performing ensembles. These ensembles participate in State and local Band Festivals as a means of evaluation. There are also many University Honor Band programs that students may audition for, which in turn help our students to earn band scholarships. This is in addition to the MS Lions Band, MBA All-State Concert Band, State Band Festival, and, Solo and Ensemble Festival. Solo and Ensemble is also offered to students in grades 6-8 at the Jr. high school level. Jazz band is a newly added class that is available for those students interested in theory, improvisation, and advanced music study. Other band activities include winter guard and percussion ensemble.

The tradition of musical excellence has always be a standard held high by the South Panola High School Band. This is evident in the band’s ability to earn straight Superiors under the leadership under the current band staff. It is also made possible by the continued support of administrators and parents alike.
